With the recent news of Alibaba’s initial public offering, the company is now valued at $214 billion, surpassing the tech giants of the world, including Facebook and Amazon. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, earned himself a cool $18 billion on the day of the IPO, making him the richest man in China.

When Ma thought of the concept for Alibaba, he gathered 24 of his closest friends and family to share his idea, Zack Ho reports for Vulcan Post. One by one, they all told him not to pursue it. As Ma reflected on that night, he told Ho, “There was only one friend (who was working in a bank then) who told me, if you want to do it, just try it. If things don’t work out the way you expected it to, you can always revert back to what you were doing before. I pondered upon this for one night, and by the next morning, I decided I would do it anyway, even if all of the 24 people opposed the idea.”

It’s reassuring to remember that the worst thing that could happen to you is that you end up where you are right now. Keep this quote in mind, too: “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.” Just because people can’t see your vision doesn’t mean it lacks value. In Ma’s case, it was a $214 billion value.
